 A new era in the Bhutanese history began on the 17th December 1907, when Trongsa penlop (the Governor of Trongsa) Ugyen Wangchuk was elected as the first hereditary King of Bhutan. Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk and Queen Jetsun Pema are quite a couple. The King ascended the throme when he was still in his twenties, a married his Queen (a commoner) in 2011.
